Interlibrary Loans: FAQs

Information, how-to, FAQs, and other tidbits regarding Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary Loan FAQs

Who can use the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service?
Interlibrary Loan privileges are available to all members of the college community, including students, staff, faculty and administrators. While we will do loans for residents within the service area, it is preferred that they go to their local public library for such loans.

Do you participate in MeLCat?
No. Kirtland Community College Library does not participate in MeLCat. Check with your local public/county/district library.

What can I request through Interlibrary Loan?
Books, articles (libraries will not lend the entire issue), DVDs, and audiobooks. Note that if an item is new (released within the last 6 months), libraries may not lend it out. They will keep it for their patrons before they lend it to other libraries.

Sorry, but we cannot get textbooks.

How long does it take for the items to get here?
Allow at least 2 weeks for your materials to arrive.

How will I be notified about my Interlibrary Loan requests?
Students/staff/faculty will be notified through your Kirtland Kmail only. Public patrons will be notified by email.

How do I check out Interlibrary Loan materials?
You must have a current Kirtland Patron Registration Card on file. If you do not, stop by the Library in Grayling. If you are a M-TEC or online student, you can fill out a Patron Registration Card by going to https://library.kirtland.edu/eg/opac/register_student

You must show your current Kirtland Student Photo ID (Student) or Kirtland Library Card (Public Patron) when picking up your materials.

Does it cost anything?
Usually, there is no charge for Interlibrary Loans. If there is, you will be notified and asked if you want to pay prior to placing the request.

How long do I have to pick up my ILL?

You have 10 days from the date of the email that is sent to you to pick up the ILL.

What happens if I don't pick up my ILL?
If ILL items are not picked up by the 10th day, they will be returned to the lending libraries. This may affect your future borrowing privileges.

How long can I keep my Interlibrary Loan items?
Loan periods are set by the lending libraries and vary from library to library. The due date will be indicated on the ILL sleeve attached to the item.

Can I renew my Interlibrary Loan?
Renewals are at the discretion of the lending libraries. Renewal requests MUST be made through the Kirtland Library at least 3 days before the date due on the ILL sleeve. Items cannot be renewed if they are overdue or if it states "No Renewals" on the ILL sleeve.

What do I owe if my Interlibrary Loan is overdue?

If the item is overdue, you will be responsible for all costs for the ILL item that is overdue. When the lending library sends us an invoice, you will receive a copy and will be responsible to either return the item or pay for it. This will affect your future borrowing privileges.
